MAP Statement on SCOTUS Request for DOJ Opinion on Honolulu Climate Suit
Washington D.C. – Phil Goldberg, Special Counsel for the Manufacturers’ Accountability Project, issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court requesting the U.S. Solicitor General to weigh in on a bid to end the Honolulu climate suit.
“Today’s order is a clear indication the Supreme Court is concerned about this litigation. There are now about a dozen states with cases seeking to govern interstate and international emissions, and it is well beyond the role of any state’s law to impose restrictions and liability on the global production, marketing, sale and use of any energy source.
Manufacturers share Honolulu’s desire to meaningfully address climate change, but we need real solutions—not lawsuits. The better path forward is for the administration, Congress and local governments to work with manufacturers to develop the technologies that will allow us to source and use energy in ways that are sustainable for us and the planet.”
