Climate Litigation Campaign: Where Each Case Stands

A handful of state and local governments have filed climate lawsuits in the past few years, seeking to hold energy manufacturers legally liable for the effects of climate change. These lawsuits will do nothing to address climate change, its impacts or its root causes. The courts that have considered the legal merits of these claims have dismissed them.

As nationwide polling has shown, voters oppose climate litigation and understand that the only way to meaningfully address climate change is to develop new technologies that can allow us to use and source energy more efficiently. The challenge for our elected leaders is to facilitate this innovation so that we can sustain modern life and the climate.

The Manufacturers’ Accountability Project has prepared the following chart to track the status of these cases. The chart was last updated on March 5, 2024.
